Rocky Chavez on Principles & Values |
Col. Chavez spent more than 28 years as a United States Marine, rising to the rank of Colonel and accepting an appointment as Chief of Staff for the 4th Marine Division. After serving his country, retirement was not an option for the Colonel, who then went on to spend nearly a decade on the Oceanside City Council. In 2009, Col. Chavez was appointed by then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and made the journey to Sacramento to serve as Undersecretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs. Later, Col. Chavez served as Acting Secretary.
On November 6, 2012 Colonel Chavez was elected to represent the 76th Assembly District that includes Camp Pendleton, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Oceanside and Vista. In his capacity as Assemblyman, Colonel Chavez serves as Vice Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee and the Assembly K-12 Education Committee. He is also a member of the Assembly Legislative Ethics, Budget, Budget Subcommittee No. 2 on Education Finance, Governor's Military Council, Health, Joint Legislative Budget, Joint Legislative Committee on Emergency Management, STEM, and Veteran's Affairs. Chavez also serves on the State Education Board for facilities. Currently, Col. Chavez is one of only two Hispanic Republicans in the California Legislature.
