Phil Bryant on Gun Control

Protect schools from violence with active shooter drills

Unfortunately, a problem exists in our schools today that threatens children of all ages. It has become commonly known as the active shooter. To help protect our students and those who teach them, I will ask you to pass a comprehensive plan to keep our school children safe. The recommendations come from a year-long study for effective results. If you will pass and fund the Mississippi Safe School Act, our parents, teachers and administrators will be allowed to care for our children in a safe and protected environment.

Analysis by Mississippi Today, Jan. 31:House Bill 1283 requires active shooter drills in addition to fire drills and emergency drills which already occur. This legislation follows last year's bill, also called the Mississippi School Safety Act, that would have allowed teachers to carry guns in the classroom after specialized training--it died in the House.

Concealed carry without permit; that's a fundamental right

Governor Phil Bryant has signed two gun rights measures into law. Senate Bill 2394 allows Mississippians the option of carrying a pistol or revolver in a purse, briefcase or other fully enclosed case without a concealed carry permit. Senate Bill 2619 allows active duty military, veterans and retired law enforcement officers to count firearms training toward the requirements for an enhanced concealed carry permit and protects Mississippians from federal overregulation of ammunition.

"The right to keep and bear arms is fundamental to America and to Mississippi," Bryant said. "I have always been a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, and I am proud to sign these bills into law."

Defend the Second Amendment

Defend the Second Amendment: As citizens of the United States, we have been constitutionally given the right to bear arms. We must always support the rights of law-abiding citizens to own guns for hunting, shooting sports and personal protection and safety. I am a longtime member of the National Rifle Association's Institute for Legislative Action and a recipient of the Kirk Fordice Freedom Award presented annually by the Central Mississippi chapter of the NRA.
