Doug Burgum on Principles & Values

Small town values are the way to get country on track again

No one ever asks the question, "what about the crime wave in small towns?" Because in a small town, neighbors help neighbors. People understand each other. If a farmer gets sick, everybody comes together and helps him get the crop up. There's accountability. There's transparency. One thing I think this country could use is somebody in the White House that understands small town values because that's our road back to get this country on track again.

You can see this great country, our future, is unlimited

When I'm on a horseback in the Badlands of North Dakota, it looks like the horizon is just limitless. And when you can almost see beyond that horizon, you can see that this great country, our future, is unlimited. But we've got to focus on innovation, not regulation. We've got to cut the red tape. We've got to drive ourselves forward. The way we win the cold war with China is by growing our economy and through innovation.

The president is supposed to bring people together

If you're a legislator you put on your jersey, you fight for your side, you vote oftentimes along party lines. If you don't vote with the party, you vote at your peril. The president of the United States is the one that's supposed to unite people. It's supposed to bring people together. It's supposed to paint a vision about a powerful, positive future. We've gone astray on that, where the presidency has also become hyper-partisan, no matter which party is in office.

The best of America is when neighbors help neighbors

When we talk about the best of America, growing up in a small town, the best of America is when neighbors help neighbors. When a farmer in North Dakota falls ill, the neighbors rally around, whether it's to get the crop planted or the crop harvested. Every spring in western North Dakota in the Badlands, when it's time for spring branding and roundup, the neighbors show up. They couldn't get the work done if they weren't neighbors helping neighbors. And we need to get back to that.

The best of America is when neighbors help neighbors, when, when, when a farmer in North Dakota falls ill, the neighbors rally around whether it's to get the crop planted or the crop harvested, you know, every spring in western North Dakota in the Badlands, when it's time for spring branding and round up, the neighbors show up. They couldn't get the work done if they weren't neighbors helping neighbors. And we need to get back to that.

Reinvented state government amid a $1B revenue shortfall

Burgum is a wealthy former software executive who lost the Republican endorsement but won the nomination in his 2016 primary challenge against Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem, the endorsed candidate.

Burgum ran in 2016 on a message of "reinventing" state government amid a $1 billion state revenue shortfall from sagging commodity prices, winning 76% of the vote with Brent Sanford, who is lieutenant governor.

Endorsed Endorsed by Donald Trump/MAGA during presidency.

Burgum is endorsed by Trump/MAGA endorsement list

Endorsements by Donald Trump, implying support of Trump's agenda and electoral style. The phrase `Make America Great Again` was popularized in Trump`s 2015 book Time to Get Tough:Making America Great Again. It is the campaign slogan embroidered on the ubiquitous red caps seen at Trump rallies (which after Trump`s presidency, became known as `MAGA rallies`).
